Review of the Legal Framework for the Administration of the GST

The Chairman of the Board of Taxation, Mr Dick Warburton, today announced the release of the Board’s issues paper on the review of the legal framework for the administration of the GST.

The Government announced on 11 June 2008 that it had asked the Board of Taxation to undertake a review of the legal framework for the administration of the GST. The focus of the review is to be on streamlining and improving the operation of the GST, reducing compliance costs, and removing anomalies.

The Board proposes to consult widely on the issues raised by the review. The Board has developed this issues paper to facilitate public consultation.

The Board will be conducting extensive consultation with stakeholders during August 2008. A timetable for consultation meetings is as follows:

4 August 2008 – Sydney
6 August 2008 – Brisbane
8 August 2008 – Melbourne
14 August 2008 – Darwin
21 August 2008 – Perth
27 August 2008 – Albury/Wodonga

More information on the consultation meetings will be available on the Board of Taxation website shortly.

The Board welcomes submissions on the issues raised in the issues paper. The closing date for submissions is 15 September 2008. Submissions may be sent to:
