Since commencing as Chair of the Board of Taxation (the Board) on 1 April 2026, I have had the privilege of meeting with a wide range of stakeholders from business, the tax profession, academia, government and the broader community.
I am writing to thank you for the time, insights and expertise you have shared with the Board over recent months. Our discussions have been invaluable in helping me better understand the challenges and opportunities facing Australia’s tax system and in informing the Board’s work program.
I am deeply grateful for the constructive and candid engagement that you have brought to these conversations. The willingness of stakeholders to share their perspectives, experience and ideas is one of the key strengths of the Board’s consultation process and plays an important role in supporting sound tax policy and administration.
I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the many organisations and professional bodies that extended invitations for me to speak at conferences, forums, and other events throughout my time as Chair. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to contribute to these discussions, to share the Board’s work and priorities, and to hear directly from stakeholders across the tax community. Those engagements have reinforced the importance of ongoing collaboration in pursuing a more effective, efficient and sustainable tax system.
As many of you may already be aware, I have been appointed Deputy Chair of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), commencing on 1 September 2026. In light of this appointment, I have resigned from my role as Chair of the Board of Taxation, effective 31 August 2026.
While my time with the Board has been shorter than anticipated, it has been a genuine privilege to contribute to the Board’s important work and to engage with so many thoughtful and committed stakeholders. I leave with a strong appreciation for the quality of expertise, professionalism and goodwill that exists across Australia’s tax community.
I would also like to take the opportunity to thank and acknowledge the work of my fellow Board Members and the Board Secretariat, all of whom have been great colleagues to work with.
